How to become a Veterinary Surgeon?

Just like an allopathic surgeon, a veterinary surgeon has to go through a rigorous schooling and training process to become an expert on animals. In fact, in UK it is now legally allowed for vet surgeons to add the title ‘Dr’ with their names, because of the simple fact that the life of animals is just as much worth as of human beings and therefore, those who are involved in the healthcare of animals, veterinary surgeons, are worth that respect and dignity as the ones who treat humans. In this article we briefly talk about the process which a person undertakes to become a veterinary surgeon.

Undergrad Education

Although not all schools, but some top level schools do require students to complete undergrad education before coming into the field of veterinary education. More importantly, the bachelors education has to be relevant otherwise, in the vet school as well, a person would have to take pre courses to come up to the level where he or she can actually begin studying veterinary sciences.

Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary schools are usually four years long education. They take students through the extensive theoretical as well as practical work to help them not only understand the animals but also be able to operate them and cure them properly. Thus, among the multiple courses that students study, there is courses like diagnosis, treatment, surgery, anatomy, prevention and much more. When a student successfully finishes the four year long course work, he or she becomes a doctor of veterinary medicine.

Just like human surgeons, animal surgery is also a subject of specialization in veterinary sciences. All Vets cannot perform surgery. But another important thing to understand here is the fact that unlike human surgeons, a veterinary surgeon has to learn the science of surgery on many different animals and after all that he can further specialize in cats or dogs surgery or some other animal. In other words, a veterinary surgeon’s work is much more extensive and delineated compared to a human surgeon. However, after this specialization, the surgeon becomes ready for getting their license.

Just getting the education is not enough. One needs a license too for actually performing surgery. The license basically makes a person register with the national council of the veterinary medicine of the respective country. Every country has a slightly varying procedure and requirement for getting a license. And the license needs to be renewed after every few years. The license helps keeping the surgeon accountable and answerable to an authority who can revoke the rights of the surgeon to perform a surgery if found guilty of negligence or some malpractice.

Once a license is achieved, the veterinary surgeon is free to practice. Options include working in a public veterinary hospital, a private one or even opening up your own hospital. A veterinary surgeon can also work as a counselor and guide people how to prevent animals from reaching a stage where a surgery becomes necessary and when it does, he can perform the surgery.
